OVER CAUTIOUS

I've learned there is such thing as being over-cautious while fishing.

On one of my first canoe fishing trips I was being a little over cautious. A friend asked if I would be interested in takng a canoe trip down the Delaware river. Having just gotten hooked on the sport, I jumped on the offer.

We met on the side of river down stream from where we were to start our trip. After loading my gear into his truck, and parking my car where it would wait for us at the end of our trip, I jumped into his truck and we headed up river. After driving about 12 miles we unloaded our gear, lowered the canoe down to the river, pushed off and were on our way.

After a great day of fishing we floated down to were my car was parked. As we loaded the canoe on the roof of my car my friend asked for the keys to the car so he could load our gear in while I strapped down the canoe. It was at this point that I realized I didn't have the keys. My buddie asked where my keys were and couldn't believe my answer. I explained to him that I didn't want to risk losing the key in the river, so I had left them in his car for safe keeping. (A little over cautious and over excited to start fishing can make you do some dumb things.)

After hiking to the nearest store my buddie was able to get the clerk to give him a ride upriver to his car, but only after waiting for her shift to end.

Like most of the dumb things we do in life, we still laugh about it to this day.

From that time on I try not to let my excitement interfere with my thinking. Also,  I keep a spare set of car keys in my tackle box along with an old drivers liscense. The reason for the drivers liscense is another story.
