RAINY DAYS

Don't let a little rainy weather ruin your day. A friend and I planned to meet to spend a few days fishing. My friend was from out of town, so this left the responsibilty of planning each days trip to me. I was going to bring him to all my hot spots, the spots that I would brag to him about over the phone.

On day one I brought him to a spot on the Delaware River near Belvidere, NJ where early that season I reeled in a 5 1/2 pound Walleye. As murphys law would dictate, we were skunked except for a few Rock Bass and Sunfish.

The next day the pressure was on, and my reputation was on the line. This was day two, with only one day remaining before my friend would have to leave town. I decided to choose a location I had never fished before, but still on the Delaware River. I had heard that the area around the Free Bridge in Easton, PA was a pretty good spot.

As we pulled out of my drive way the heavens opened up and the rain came down. Hoping it would be a short storm we continued on our way. After all, we had a 40 minute drive. As we dropped the boat into the river, the rain slowed but was constant.

The river was moving fast with all the extra rain runoff that was being added to it. Due to the strong current and my massive 9.9 HP engine we had trouble moving up river. We decided to anchor about 30 feet up river from the bridge.  As we started to fish we quickly forgot about the rain, and the fact that if the rain came down any harder and the river started to run faster my engine wouldn't get us back to the boat launch.

Every cast hooked a fish. It seemed as if every fish on the river was hiding under the bridge. I redeemed myself with a great, but wet day of fishing.

I have found that rainy days can be great. The crowds and the pressure they put on the fish are gone. I recommend being cautious when fishing in the rain. It can be as dangerous as it is fun. Things like river current, lightening, and hypothermia can kill, so use your head and know when a little rain is really too much rain.
